GINTAMA REVIEW & THOUGHTS.

72078l

-This is my opinion/thoughts about Gintama and will contain spoilers!-

Gintama is a one-of-a-kind anime that always made me laugh and was very enjoyable. I honestly have to say that it is one of the best, if not the best, anime I’ve seen so far. When I first started Gintama, I had no idea what this anime was about. I dived into this anime blind and open-minded. At first, it was pretty boring and I couldn’t keep up with any of the jokes they told. I think if you know enough about Japan and the pop culture and the famous people in Japan, you might be able to understand the jokes. But since I’m someone who is not from Japan and knew nothing about Japan, I was having difficulties understanding. Fortunately, I kept at it and as I kept watching Gintama and got to know all the characters and their personalities, I began to enjoy each episode.

It’s hard to explain what Gintama is really about. I see Gintama as an anime that contains a lot of arcs and stories that do not really relate to one another, unless it’s an arc. Gintama doesn’t have a “universal” story, plot or goal like most animes do. For example, if we look at Naruto, it contains a protagonist who has a goal, and because of that goal, it helps keep the story moving along. While in Gintama, it doesn’t have a certain goal or story that keeps the story moving along. Each episode is different from the last episode and contains new material and a new story. To me, this concept is different and very eye-catching. It catches my attention and I’m not entirely bored since each episode is new and has a conclusion. This also means that most episodes are pretty ridiculous in story and really random. I remember watching an episode about out three main characters, which I will get to in a second, fighting each other in order to get the last crab leg. Each episode contains a lot of absurdity, randomness, and comedy.

What I enjoyed most about this anime is that it’s not afraid to take risks. What I mean is that it makes fun of other animes, famous people and even the audience watching the anime. It even makes fun of the creator of Gintama. That was one thing that was interesting and entertaining. If this anime had a story or plot, it will go something like this: Gintama is about Gin who runs Yorozuya, a small and unknown business where he do odd jobs for other people for money. Working alongside him is glasses-wearing Shinpachi and monster-like strength Kagura. As they work odd jobs and living in a world run invaded by aliens and where the old and new collide, they encounter strange and unique characters that make their life difficult and never boring. If you want a better description: here.

CHARACTERS:

I believe the characters were the star of the anime, the main thing that kept the anime entertaining. The characters kept the anime interesting and made me want to watch more of it. I don’t really like animes with a huge cast of characters and I hate watching harem animes. But for some reason, these characters wedged themselves into my heart and I ended up loving them all. Each character is different in their own way and when combined together, it creates this awesome anime. At first, I hated that this cast was so huge but as I kept watching, the characters grew on me. We have our three main characters:

  1. Sakata Gintoki: Gin is our main character/protagonist/hero. He was and still is, my favorite character in Gintama. He’s not like most protagonists. He’s doesn’t have a goal or mission in the anime, he’s incredibly lazy, money-hungry, loves gambling, perverted and absolutely hilarious. He’s relatable. He’s not someone with incredible powers or someone who wants to save the world. He would rather sleep or gamble. But Gin is very loyal to his friends, even though he doesn’t really show or express it, and will battle anyone just to save them. He’s a very different kind of protagonist that you have to watch and figure out for yourselves. He’s a very likable character and other people in the anime is drawn to him.

  1. Shimura Shinpachi: Shinpachi is our “straight-man” in this anime. It’s hard to explain what a “straight-man” is but it’s not what you’re thinking. After researching a little, a “straight-man” or a tsukkomi is someone who is more reasonable and more smarter than the other characters. For example, in each episode, anything that would be considered unreasonable or impossible, the “straight-man” would butt in and say something reasonable. That is who Shinpachi is. He’s a glasses-wearing samurai who works with Gin. What cracks me up is that most of the characters acknowledge the glasses as Shinpachi rather that Shinpachi himself. He’s the more reasonable person in the group.

477907-gintama___230_._10.38___00.37.01_  Shinpachi

  1. Kagura: Kagura is an Amanto, an alien from the Yato clan, a very strong type of alien. They are weak in the sun but incredibly strong. They all have pale white skin and carries an umbrella, which serves as protection from the sun and a weapon. They also eat a lot, I mean a lot, a lot. I enjoyed Kagura’s character a lot. She is the female version of Gin. She’s unreasonable, petty, lazy, unpredictable and hilarious. Her personality and attitude was influenced by Gin. Since Yato’s are known for their incredible strength, they are violent and blood-thirsty. Kagura traveled to Earth so search for a place to call home. She met Gin and Shinpachi and grew to call them as a family. She has a rivalry with Okita Sougo, another character, and one of the strong female character in the anime.

We also have the Shinsengumi:

  1. Kondo Isao: Chief of the Shinsengumi, a police force in Edo, and brings huge comedy relief in the anime. Mostly known as “Gorilla”, he has a huge, stalker-ish, crush on Shinpachi’s older sister, and is always at the brunt of most attacks and jokes. Honest and a nice-natured guy, he is the soul of the Shinsengumi.

gintama228-06

  1. Hijikata Toshiro: Vice-Captain of the Shinsengumi, he’s a chain-smoker and more of the serious character in the anime. Extremely loyal to Kondo, he’s a true samurai and serious about his job, also called “demonic vice-captain” due to his seriousness. He sees Gin as a rival and is obsessed with mayonnaise. He smothers every food he eats with mayo.

Hijikata_toushiro_ova

  1. Okita Sougo: He’s the first division captain of the Shinsengumi. He dislikes Hijikata and will always find a way to attack or try to kill him in order to become Vice-Captain. He’s extremely sadistic, sees Kagura as his rival and pretty much does whatever he wants.

Sougo_Episode_5

Other important characters:

  1. Shimura Tae: Shinpachi’s older sister. Being stalked by Kondo. Pretty strong.
  2. Sadaharu: Yorozuya’s pet. A huge dog but really an inugami.
  3. Kotaro Katsura: Called “Zura” by most, a Joi rebel/terrorist leader who is trying to overthrow the Shogun and government. Gin’s former comrade in the Joi War, he constantly want to change Edo.
  4. Hasegawa Taizo: Known as Madao, someone who is poor, unlucky and unemployed. He’s a good friend of Gin’s and often fo gambling together.
  5. Sarutobi Ayame: Assassin and obsessed with Gin. Wears glasses and a huge masochist.

Of course their are other characters in this anime but you’ll have to watch it to find out. Since each episode is different, we are introduced to new characters and new stories. All these characters created an incredible experience for me that made me enjoy watching it.

For me, especially season 4 of Gintama, was bittersweet. The last two arcs, the Shogunate’s Assassination Arc and the Farwell Shinsengumi Arc was the best arcs ever and contained the best episodes ever. My heart was tearing apart as I watched the last couple episodes of Gintama. It made me love Gintama even more. I don’t want to go into much details but it was incredible and the best Gintama has ever been.

I honestly can’t explain what Gintama really is and I can’t properly “review” this anime because it’s so different. My overall opinion is that Gintama is awesome and I love it. It’s really enjoyable and made me laugh in every episode. I loved all the characters and every story in each episode was awesome. I can’t explain anymore than this. Highly recommend this anime.

Here is some of my favorite episodes that you can definitely watch without watching it in order:

  1. Episode 38 – “Only Children Play in the Snow”
  2. Episode 40 – 43 – I call the “Umibozo Arc”
  3. Episode 65 – “Rhinoceros Beetles Teach Boys that Life is Precious”
  4. Episode 66 – “Dango Over Flowers”
  5. Episode 119 – “Within Each Box of Cigarettes, Are One or Two Cigarettes That Smell Like Horse Dung”
  6. Episode 139 – 146 – The “Yoshiwara Arc”
  7. Episode 151 – 152 – To sum it up: “Kondo, The Shogun, Katsura and a Haircut”

KIZNIAVER EP. 1-6 THOUGHTS.

-Spoiler Alert!-

I am currently watching this season’s anime and Kiznaiver is probably one of my favorites. This is an original anime from Trigger, an anime studio known for Kill la Kill. I think so far, this anime is doing great and I love learning about each of these characters and their background story. The plot revolves around seven high school students, who have no connection towards each other besides being in the same classroom (except for the main character and his childhood friend), who experience this bond of sharing the same pain. This is called the Kizuna System. It’s a little confusing at first, but after watching the first six episodes, they explain more about this theme.

“Everyone wants to connect with someone else” – Sonozaki Noriko

These seven people equally share pain amongst each other and through several circumstances, their bonds with each other grow. They are picked due to this concept of the “Seven Deadly Sins” but in this anime, the titles are different from the original seven deadly sins.

  1. The Cunning Normal – Yuta-kun
  2. High and Mighty – Maki-san
  3. Annoyingly Self-Righteous – Chidori-san
  4. The Eccentric Headcase – Nico-san
  5. The Imbecile – Katsuhira-kun
  6. Muscle-head Thug – Tenga-kun
  7. Immoral – Hisomu-kun

Our main character, Katsuhira-kun, feels no pain and has no interest in other people. He’s indifferent, “airy” and a little emotionless. As he goes on these missions run by Sonozaki-san, he discovers that there is more than just physical pain, but emotional pain as well. You see his character develop a little throughout these six episodes, from someone who doesn’t really care about himself to someone who’s starting to feel.

Throughout each episode, they go on missions that help strengthen their bonds. In their first mission, they discovered that they could share physical pain when one of the seven people get hurt. The second mission, they realized that they could also feel each other’s emotional pain, pain from the heart. There’s something different about this anime that makes me want to find more about their story and what is the real Kizuna System. I have some theories and questions about this anime that keeps me coming back for more.

My Theories:

  1. I have a feeling that the Kizuna Committee tried this Kizuna System before in the past but failed in succeeding whatever they were trying to accomplish.
  2. I feel that Katsuhira and Sonozaki are connected to each other in the past – if you look at the beginning and his flashback, the mysterious girl looks like Sonozaki.
  3. I also think Sonozaki and Hisomu have a connection because there was this scene where Maki and Yuta was talking about how dangerous Hisomu was and how he might be connected with Sonozaki. The moment Hisomu showed up, Sonozaki did too.
  4. I think Katsuhira lost his past memories and the only one who knows that is Sonozaki.
  5. I think Katsuhira and Sonozaki was in the Kizuna System when they were little (flashback scene) but failed which made Katsuhira lose his memories and Sonozaki being apart of the Committee as punishment?

Overall, great anime so far. I’m going to keep watching and keep updating.

FAVORITE SONGS IN ANIME

Anime openings and endings are quite popular among people in the anime community. Besides the plot, character, art style, and the overall concept, anime openings and endings start and finish the perfect anime. I’ve found a lot of very good anime openings and endings on YouTube and watching anime and I’m going to share some of mine with you. In no particular order, here is my favorite songs in anime.

  1. To start off this list, my all-time, never-get-tired anime song is Re:Re: (Single Version) by: Asian Kung-Fu Generation. I instantly fell in love with this opening song the first time I heard it on Boku Dake ga Inai Machi. That long instrumental of guitar, bass, drums, and whatever instrument that are playing, at the beginning creates this awesome build-up to the main part in the song. I don’t know a lot about Asian Kung-Fu Generation or their singers, but I know they’re quite famous when it comes to anime openings and endings. I love the main lead singer’s voice that matches so well with this song. I will never get tired of this song and whenever I listen to this song, a creepy, happy smile appears on my face. Scary? No? Anyways, this is probably my favorite anime song by far.
  2. The next song on this list is from Gintama, Sakura Mitsutsuki by Spyair. Gintama has a lot of episodes and a lot of openings and I’m sure this is one of the most popular one from this anime. I love the electric guitar intro at the beginning and then we hear the singers soft but strong voice. It brings shivers to my spine. This is my favorite Spyair song and I never get tired of this song. The chorus is catchy and you can hear the strong emotions from his voice. I honestly don’t know what he’s saying but I love it nonetheless. The good thing about Spyair that I absolutely love is their guitar, instrumental solo. It’s amazing and shows how talented this J-Rock band is. Overall, I love Spyair!
  3. Hey, hey Samurai Heart! (x2). Another song from Gintama? Of course, it is! This is my favorite ending from Gintama and it is Samurai Heart (Some Like it Hot!) by Spyair. The chanting of Hey, hey Samurai Heart! in beginning always have me chanting along. I think Spyair can do no wrong when singing anime songs because this is an awesome song with strong vocal, incredible instrumental skills, and overall build-up that perfectly matches Gintama’s concept. Just watching that ending playing this song was freakin’ epic.
  4. By the end of 2015, this was one of the best opening songs in anime and it is Brave Shine by Aimer. This song is the opening to Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works second season, and was it everything. When I heard this opening, I was absolutely obsessed with it and had to download it right away. I searched everywhere for this song because I wanted to hear it every day and night. I love Aimer’s voice and she perfectly sang this song to perfection. My favorite is the chorus, that damn, awesome chorus. You can hear how the verses build-up to the chorus and it gets my heart racing.
  5. I enjoyed watching Kyoukai no Kanata and it became one of my favorite anime and I love the ending song even more. It is Daisy by Stereo Dive Foundation. I love that special effect at the beginning and that was what drew me in. The ending was super sad and together with this song, I was crying like a baby. This is a nice, mellow, simple song with so much feeling and emotions. I never had the will to next this song whenever it plays and then I remember scenes from the anime…my eyes are tearing up… Anyways, is it possible to love a song so much? I don’t know but this is one of the best.
  6. If you knew me personally and know what kind of anime’s I watch, sports wouldn’t be your first choice. I believe two months ago, I was in an anime slump and I wanted to watch something new and different from other anime’s I usually watched. So I saw Haikyuu!! and decided to watch it. I am so happy that I gave it a chance and this awesome anime became one of my favorites. When I saw that second opening and this song, Fly High!! by Burnout Syndromes, began playing, it was perfect. If you watched the anime before, you can relate and know what I’m talking about. Kurasano started off at the top but fell to the bottom. As Shoyo and Kageyama and the other first years joined the volleyball team, they strived to fly again. This song was perfect. Sorry, spoiler alert.
  7. I only watched the first episode of Guilty Crown but I don’t have to watch the whole series to say that I like this song. My Dearest by Supercell is, I think, a quite popluar song in the anime community. I didn’t realise how long it was when I heard the whole thing. This song has a blend of everything, nice slow singing that leads to a strong chorus. It’s an iconic song.
  8. I was looking through Asian Kung-Fu Generation’s songs on ITunes and stumbled along this song, Rewrite by Asian Kung-Fu Generation. I had heard of this song before but didn’t know where it came from until I did a little bit more research. I haven’t watched the original Fullmetal Alchemist, but I started watching Brotherhood. It was thanks to this rock band that introduced me to J-Rock. I like how it starts off with a “lazy” feeling and then bam! You hear the singer’s strong voice when he sings the chorus. Only he could pull that off.
  9. Bakemonogatari is a popular anime and this ending is pretty awesome. The song is Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari by supercell. I felt like I knew this song before I watched the anime and I instantly loved this song. I’m not sure why I like this song but it’s catchy tune and simple melody got me humming along.

Honorable mentions: Chains by Back-on, Masayume Chasing by BoA, Bravely You by Lia, Alones by Aqua Timez, Ebb and Flow by Ray, Harukaze by Scandal, Imagination by Spyair, Chu Bara by Kelun, Kyouran Hey Kids!! by The Oral Cigarettes, rainy tone by (K)NoW_NAME, Renegade by SDF, Tetsukazu no Kanjou from Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Velonica by Aqua Timez, Yoru no Kuni by Annabel, and the Dango song from Clannad.

FAVORITE ANIME

I am a HUGE anime nerd, fan, watcher, you name it. I’ve watched the long running anime’s like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, and enjoy watching the new ones such as Sakamoto Desu ga? and Koutetsujou no Kabaneri. I know and watched a lot of anime series and found out which ones were my absolute favorite. Like with my books, I have pretty high standards when it comes to what anime I should watch and I am really picky. The anime’s I don’t watch are:

  • Harem
  • Ecchi
  • Mecha

So anything like Asterisk Wars or anything with these genres mentioned above, I will probably never, ever watch it. I’m not saying that it isn’t good, it’s just not what I generally like to watch. Now here is a list of some of my favorite anime, in no particular order, and might possibly review it, enjoy!

  1. Gintama – genres: action, comedy, historical, parody, samurai. 4 seasons
  2. Kyoukai no Kanata – genres: supernatural, romance, comedy, fantasy. 1 season
  3. Haikyuu!! – genres: sports, shounen
  4. Nagi no Asukara – genres: fantasy, supernatural, romance
  5. Chihayafuru – genres: sports, slice of life
  6. Toradora – genres: comedy, romance

I would have to say GINTAMA is my all time favorite anime. I will definitely write a review about this awesome and incredible anime very soon.
